Research:

Surface Science: 
Research in my group, which is part of the surface physics group in Akron, involves monolayer growth on crystalline and amorphous substrates in air, high- and ultra-high vacuum. We have several commercial instruments for the preparation and analysis of samples. Work is currently focused on the investigation of the composition and growth mechanisms of inorganic monolayers on amorphous ultra-thin films of silicon, germanium, and their oxides using spectroscopic and topological analysis. Commercial instruments for spectroscopy in our lab include a Mattson Cygnus X-100 FTIR bench which we have modified to accommodate multiple reflection-absorption capability for surface analysis, while other in-house built instruments such as state-of-the-art Inelastic Electron Tunnelling Spectrometers are also widely used. Topological analysis is performed primarily using a Digital Instruments Nanoscope II equipped with Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) heads; an RHK Technology UHV-STM is currently being incorporated in our custom designed UHV system which will also house other surface analytical techniques such as Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy, Reverse-View LEEDS, and others.
